[M4F] The Groundskeeper Tends The Greenhouse Late For You

A quiet groundskeeper tending the greenhouses at night takes in a weary stranger, listens without rushing her, and earns her trust until she finally lets herself be looked after and kept warm.

The greenhouses sit quiet at this hour. The main gates are locked, the visitors are gone, and the only company I have is the drip of the irrigation lines and the steam rising off the propagation bench where I've got a tray of cuttings rooting under glass. You found me here the way people always find me, when the rest of the world sleeps and I am doing the small, patient work nobody else wants. You came in from the cold, wrapped in a coat that's too big for you, and you stood in the doorway of the glasshouse with your hands pushed deep into your pockets and your breath clouding the air. I didn't ask why you were there. Tonight the city is full of people trying to be loud and important, and you looked like somebody who needed the opposite of that. I just nodded toward the little wood stove I keep in the back potting shed and told you to come get warm, and you did, and you sat on the upturned crate by the stove while I finished thinning the ferns. You watched my hands the whole time. I could feel it, that quiet attention, and it made the work slower and sweeter than it had any right to be. When I finally set the trowel down and sat across from you, you started to talk. Not to confess, not to perform. Just to let me hear what it sounds like inside you after a long year. So I listened the way I tend the plants, patient, present, not trying to fix anything, just there. And I told you the truth: that I've spent my life learning to read the small signs things give you when they're ready to trust, and you had been giving me every one of them since you stepped through the door. When I reached out and took your hand, you let me. When I brought your cold fingers to my mouth and breathed warmth into them, you let me. And when I leaned in slow, giving you one long moment to turn away, you didn't. We kissed there in the warm dark, with the smell of soil and jasmine and wet cedar around us, and it was tender in a way that surprised us both. I held you against me on that old crate and let you be heavy for a while, let you rest, because I could tell you'd been carrying everything yourself for much too long. The steam kept rising from the bench, the little stove ticked and sighed, and I stroked your hair and told you about the garden the way I know it: how the tomatoes blush along the south wall, how the greenhouse keeps this one patch of warmth alive through the deep dead of winter, how nothing here is judged for how slowly it grows. You laughed, soft and a little broken, like you'd forgotten you could still make that sound, and it undid me clean through. And I told you then that you could stay as long as you needed, that this glasshouse stays warm for you, that I'd be right here in the quiet tending to you the way I tend to everything else I love, careful and constant and glad. Not rushing, not taking, just there. Whenever it gets cold out there, whenever the world gets to be too much, you know where I am. You know the light is on in the greenhouse late, and it's waiting for you. Stay tonight. Let me take care of you. It's been a long time since I had somebody worth keeping warm, and I intend to keep you.
